Nursing textbooks for students are expensive, and nursing programs come with long reading lists. Buying everything on day one is rarely necessary. The smarter approach is to identify the few books you will use across several semesters, buy them first, and add the rest only when a course actually needs them.

Start with your program’s required list
Your syllabus is the first filter. Separate the books into three groups:
- Required and used every week: buy these first.
- Required but used for one assignment or module: wait until the module starts.
- Recommended: buy only if you find a real gap in your understanding.
Always match the edition your instructor uses: page references, chapter numbers and exam questions are often based on it.
Core nursing textbooks for students
Fundamentals of nursing
The foundation of the first year: assessment, basic care, safety, communication and the nursing process. Two widely used options are Fundamentals of Nursing, 11th Edition and Fundamentals of Nursing: The Art and Science of Person-Centered Care, 10th Edition. Use the one your program assigns.
Medical-surgical nursing
The largest subject in most programs, and the book you will keep the longest. Lewis’s Medical-Surgical Nursing, 12th Edition covers assessment and management of clinical problems by body system and remains useful well into practice.
Pharmacology
Choose a pharmacology book written for nurses: Lehne’s Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 10th Edition or Pharmacology and the Nursing Process, 10th Edition. Pair it with Dosage Calculations for Nursing Students if medication math is a weak point. Our guide on how to study pharmacology explains how to use them efficiently.
Nursing diagnosis and care planning
Care plans appear in almost every clinical placement. Ackley and Ladwig’s Nursing Diagnosis Handbook, 13th Edition is a practical companion for writing them.
Specialty courses
Buy these when the course begins: Maternity and Pediatric Nursing, 4th Edition for maternal-child modules, AACN Essentials of Progressive Care Nursing, 5th Edition for higher-acuity care, and Davis’s Diseases and Disorders, 6th Edition as a quick reference on conditions.
Research and evidence-based practice
Usually needed later in the program: Essentials of Nursing Research, 10th Edition for appraising evidence, and Writing for Nursing and Midwifery Students for assignments. If you have a literature review to write, see our step-by-step guide on writing a medical literature review.
What to buy, and when
| When | Buy | Can wait |
|---|---|---|
| Start of year 1 | Fundamentals, pharmacology | Specialty books |
| First clinical placement | Nursing diagnosis handbook | Research texts |
| Year 2 | Medical-surgical nursing | Advanced practice titles |
| Specialty modules | The matching specialty book | Anything not assigned |
| Final year | Research and writing guides | Duplicates of books you already own |
Buying nursing textbooks for students: how to save money
- Digital editions are usually cheaper and searchable, which helps during care-plan writing. Check the format and edition first: our guide on choosing medical eBooks lists what to verify.
- Do not buy two books for the same role. One fundamentals text and one pharmacology text are enough.
- Keep the books you will reuse. Med-surg and pharmacology remain useful for licensing exam preparation.
If you are preparing for the NCLEX, the exam content is defined by the NCSBN: use its official test plan to decide which topics to review in your textbooks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an older edition to save money?
Sometimes, for stable subjects, but it is risky for pharmacology and clinical guidelines, and page references may not match your course. Ask your instructor first.
Are digital nursing textbooks as good as print?
For most students, yes: they are searchable and portable. Prefer a format that keeps the original page layout (such as PDF) for books with many tables and diagrams. See our comparison of PDF vs EPUB for medical textbooks.
Which book is most important for the whole program?
For most students, the medical-surgical textbook: it covers the widest range of content and stays useful until the licensing exam.
